Solar Future?

I saw these on t.v. the other night and wanted to pass them on. Its pretty good to see some pressure being felt by the Howard government over this...

Watch Lateline's story on the Australian government's energy plans, including info on the new solar plant (good), and howard's nuclear eyes (bad), as well as Lateline's fairly hard hitting interview with Senator Ian Campbell, Australia's Environment Minister, on Global Warming and Australia's energy.

Download the solar story by right clicking on either:

20061025_Late_Solar.m4v (Quicktime - 9MB)
20061025_L ate_Solar.wmv (Windows Media Player - 8.6MB)

and download the interview with Senator Ian Campbell, Australia's Environment Minister, on Global Warming and Australia's energy needs by right clicking on either

20061025_late_campbell video. m4v (Quicktime - 55MB)
20061025_late_campbell video. wmv (Windows Media Player - 44MB)

and selecting "save link as" or "save target as," depending on your browser.

Ruben's Tube

This guy has a nice little physics idea... pump gas through a PVC tube with holes in it and light it up. Play sounds through a speaker in one end of the tube and watch the flames!

Check out the rest of his site too, it has got lots of science goodness like the awesome disguise octopus.

Web Sequencer

Haven't tried it much but even if it doesn't work well... what a frickin' cool idea.

PS - to anyone that cares, I will be in Guinea (West Africa) for the next 4 weeks for work. I may even manage to post on my blog.

Slightly Blue

An interesting use for flikr. Change the slide bar to a different colour and it shows excellent photos that have that colour. Better yet, they are licensed for your creative use under Creative Commons, just remember to check their licenses underneath.

Natural Power

For anyone thats seen the Inconvenient Truth and is motivated to make some changes, what about switching your power bill to natural (wind and solar) energy? Basically the bill goes up by 3c a unit, but the amount your pay all up (your whole bill) is guaranteed to source that much extra green energy going into the grid, and less coal energy is then used to fulfill our power requirements. This is a good way to start cutting personal greenhouse emmisions, basically by adding a few dollars onto yr power bill every month.

Have a look at it here and in more detail in this PDF (shows the extra cost you can roughly expect on yr bill).

To sign up, ring them on 13 13 53 (press 5 when the recorded message starts asking you to choose an option), and tell the telephonist that you want 100% Natural Power (there is also Earth Friendly as another, slightly cheaper enviro option, but this still uses coal power, but offsets the emmisions with green projects.). This is for Perth people only obviously, but there are similiar options around OZ.

Well another footy season ends with dissapointment as the Wet Toast held off the defiant swannies in the dying seconds. The blue and gold filling the Melbourne streets all week was a bit nauseating but be careful what you say to Whitegoose and Jane as they takes their dirty birds very seriously indeed. Here's an example of post-game revelry...they were flying high, naturally

after a back-sac-n-crack wax that went horribly wrong, Pete decided to cover his shame with this cheeky number from Russian designer Nutgrab Ingtard.
